John M. Zerwas, MD, was officially named Chancellor of The University of Texas System at the August 20 Board of Regents meeting. Following his appointment, Zerwas announced his executive leadership team, selecting members from within the UT System.

“I’m honored by the extraordinary opportunity granted to me by Chairman Eltife and the entire Board of Regents, and I’m grateful to work with my senior team and all the UT institution presidents as we support the important missions and growth of the campuses,” said Zerwas. “In naming my executive leadership team, I didn’t need to look beyond our own professionals here at the UT System. They are among the most experienced, high performing, ethical and strategic advisors anywhere in higher education.”

Archie Holmes, PhD, will continue as Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. He will oversee academic administration across UT institutions as they expand their research and innovation efforts.

Jonathan Pruitt has transitioned from Executive Vice Chancellor of Business Affairs to Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer earlier this year. In this role, he manages finance and budget divisions along with benefits, technology services, real estate, and human resources.

Julia Rathgeber, JD, is now Deputy Chancellor and Senior Policy Advisor. She provides policy guidance to both the chancellor and regents on legal matters as well as state and federal governmental affairs while continuing her leadership in Governmental Relations.

Randa Safady, PhD, remains Vice Chancellor for External Affairs, Communications, and Advancement Services. She leads communications strategies including media relations and philanthropy efforts for the system.

Dan Sharphorn, JD continues as Vice Chancellor and General Counsel. He advises university leaders on legal issues such as intellectual property rights and compliance matters.

Stacey Napier, JD serves as General Counsel to the Board of Regents where she acts as a liaison between board members and executive leadership.

Last month saw Melissa Villarreal García elevated to Senior Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff to the Chancellor after previously serving in Health Affairs. García now advises on operational strategy for advancing system goals.

Chancellor Zerwas will maintain oversight over Health Affairs while David Lakey, MD assumes greater responsibility for day-to-day operations within that office.
