In Central Texas, Primarily Primates, Inc. operates a sanctuary dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating primates that have been used in laboratories, the entertainment industry, or kept as exotic pets. The organization cares for over 300 animals, focusing on compassionate care, physical rehabilitation, and enrichment to help restore natural behaviors.

During the recent SXSW event, UPLIFT Desk staff met with representatives from Primarily Primates. The team learned about the sanctuary’s ongoing needs and discovered that resources are primarily directed toward animal care rather than office improvements. As a result, UPLIFT Desk donated new chairs and desks to improve the working environment for the sanctuary’s staff.

Primarily Primates also raises funds by selling artwork created by some of its residents. One such resident is Baxter, a chimpanzee who was born in a research lab and later trained for television before being rescued by the sanctuary. His paintings are among those sold to support his care.

A representative from UPLIFT Desk said: “For us, philanthropy is woven into our company DNA, especially when it supports neighbors doing incredible work right here in Texas. It’s a little ‘bananas’ to think how a walk through SXSW led to a long-term partnership with a primate sanctuary, but we wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

The sanctuary is currently constructing a new enclosure for four recently arrived chimpanzees. This addition will provide more space for all 31 chimpanzees at the facility and allow flexibility during maintenance of other enclosures.

Primarily Primates continues its mission to offer refuge and rehabilitation for primates in need across Central Texas.
