University Health has received Magnet status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) for the fourth consecutive time, marking a significant achievement in nursing excellence and patient care. Magnet is recognized as the highest credential for nursing quality in healthcare organizations across the United States. According to the ANCC, only about 10% of hospitals nationwide attain this level of recognition, and just 2% have achieved it four times.

Chief Nurse Executive Dina Perez-Graham stated, “Magnet really showcases not only the excellent quality our nurses provide but also their professionalism, compassion and kindness. We are so very proud of our entire team.”

University Health is now one of only 20 hospitals in Texas—and the sole institution in San Antonio—to earn Magnet designation four times. The hospital underwent an extensive multi-year review process that included a four-day site visit involving numerous meetings and tours. This evaluation required comprehensive reports on leadership, processes, innovation, engagement, and patient experience.

Perez-Graham addressed her team after the final review: “The appraisers saw what I have the privilege of witnessing every single day: your compassion, your strength and your pride in the work you do. What resonated most was the genuine heartfelt connection you each have for your work and to our profession. Your love for your work, your unwavering commitment to our patients and your belief in nursing excellence wasn’t something we had to prove. It was simply who we are.”

During the announcement event, ANCC Magnet Commission Chair David Marshall cited University Health’s commitment to culturally sensitive care and highlighted staff pride in serving all patients. He also noted that support for professional development among nurses at University Health has led to a nurse retention rate above industry averages.

University Health first achieved Magnet status in 2010 after completing a five-year application process—the first health system in South Texas to do so—and has maintained its standing ever since.

“Achieving Magnet designation for the fourth time is a distinguished honor that reflects the exceptional skill, professionalism and commitment of our nursing team,” said Ed Banos, President & CEO of University Health. “This recognition affirms that our nurses consistently meet the highest standards of excellence in patient care and safety and underscores our unwavering dedication to a culture of clinical excellence.”
