University Health is collaborating with Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai and county commissioners to provide free flu shots at drive-thru events in four locations across the city. The initiative is open to adults and children aged six months and older, allowing participants to receive their vaccinations without leaving their vehicles.
The previous flu season saw hospitals nationwide experience a significant number of outpatient visits and hospitalizations. University Health reported positivity rates exceeding 67% for one or more respiratory viruses in January, with nearly 870 positive flu cases recorded in a single week.
“Respiratory virus season typically runs from the fall through the spring, but we have already seen a late summer surge of COVID-19, and I expect a rise in flu and RSV cases to follow. So now is the time to think about protecting yourself and your loved ones. Wash your hands often, cover your cough, stay home if you are sick, see your doctor if needed, and get vaccines early, including a flu shot, for the best protection,” said Dr. Leo Lopez, chief community and population health officer for University Health.
Older adults, young children, and immunocompromised individuals face increased risks from influenza complications. Vaccination can help protect these vulnerable groups.
Flu shots will be provided at no cost during these events; however, advance registration is required. Those interested should register each recipient online at universityhealth.com/flu.
Drive-thru vaccination events are scheduled as follows:
– Saturday, Sept. 13 (8 a.m.–noon) at Precinct 1 Satellite Office (3505 Pleasanton Road), hosted by Commissioner Rebeca Clay-Flores.
– Saturday, Sept. 20 (8 a.m.–noon) at Freeman Coliseum (3201 E. Houston Street), hosted by Commissioner Tommy Calvert.
– Saturday, Oct. 11 (8 a.m.–noon) at Dub Farris Athletic Complex (8400 North Loop 1604 W), hosted by Commissioner Grant Moody.
– Saturday, Oct. 25 (8 a.m.–noon) at Gustafson Stadium (7001 Culebra Road), hosted by Commissioner Justin Rodriguez.
COVID-19 vaccines will not be offered during these events; individuals seeking information on the latest COVID-19 vaccine are advised to contact their healthcare provider.
