For the third consecutive year, University Health has been recognized as one of San Antonio’s top workplaces, according to the annual Top Workplace survey by the San Antonio Express-News. The distinction is based on confidential feedback from employees collected through a third-party survey conducted by Energage.
Ed Banos, President and CEO of University Health, stated, “As University Health has once again been recognized as a Top Workplace, this honor reflects how we work together as one team, united by our commitment to excellence in care and service. Our board of managers often hears how our employees are truly the heart of University Health—dedicated, compassionate and mission-driven. This recognition confirms University Health as a place where people feel supported, empowered and proud to work. As we continue our unprecedented growth and expansion, I am confident that the same culture of excellence and teamwork will thrive in our new facilities and beyond.”
The survey measures several aspects of employee experience including respect, support, opportunities for growth, and empowerment.
Eric Rubino, CEO of Energage, said, “Earning a Top Workplaces award is a badge of honor for companies, especially because it comes authentically from their employees. That’s something to be proud of. In today’s market, leaders must ensure they’re allowing employees to have a voice and be heard. That’s paramount. Top Workplaces do this, and it pays dividends.”
University Health is noted as the only locally owned health system in San Antonio and Bexar County. It employs thousands across two hospitals and more than 30 outpatient clinics. The organization is expanding with additional hospitals—University Health Palo Alto Hospital on the South Side near Texas A&M–San Antonio and University Health Retama Hospital along I-35 north of Loop 1604—set to open in early 2027. Two new clinics are also expected to open soon: University Health Vida on the South Side and University Health Wheatley on the East Side.
As an academic medical center for South Texas, University Health provides advanced care for severe illnesses and injuries while also serving as a training ground for future health professionals. Its designations include Level I Trauma Center status for both adults and children, Comprehensive Stroke Center accreditation, as well as Level IV Maternity Center and NICU.
University Health operates a broad network that includes primary care centers, Community First Health Plans—a nonprofit health plan—and University Medicine Associates—a nonprofit provider group practice.
