The U.S. Census Bureau has released updated statistics on state-to-state migration flows and place of birth for 2024. The data, which comes from the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates, provides insights into how people are moving within the United States.

The new table package includes two main components. The first is State-to-State Migration Flows, which offers estimates on the number of people relocating between all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and from abroad to the United States. The second component is State of Residence by Place of Birth, detailing where people currently live in relation to their birthplace across these regions.

Geographic mobility, as defined by the Census Bureau, involves tracking movement both within states and across different boundaries in the country.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau: “The State-to-State Migration Flows table package contains: State-to-State Migration Flows. This table provides estimates of the number of people moving between the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico and to the United States from abroad. State of Residence by Place of Birth. This table provides estimates of people currently living in the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico by place of birth.”

These statistics help policymakers and researchers understand population shifts and trends in geographic mobility throughout the United States.
