The U.S. Census Bureau has released the 2023 Business Dynamics Statistics (BDS), providing updated information on business activity in the United States. The dataset includes measures such as job creation and destruction, establishment births and deaths, and firm startups and shutdowns, covering the overall economy and breaking down data by establishment and firm characteristics.

According to the Census Bureau, “The data provide measures of business dynamics, such as job creation and destruction, establishment births and deaths, and firm startups and shutdowns for the economy overall and aggregated by establishment and firm characteristics. BDS is an annual time series spanning 1978 to 2023.”

Users can access the data through multiple platforms including the main BDS site, the Census API, and BDS Explorer. The explorer tool allows users to view the entire BDS dataset using line charts, bar charts, thematic maps, and customizable dashboards for comparing various measures of business dynamics.

Further information about accessing or analyzing these statistics is available on the official BDS webpage as well as through BDS Explorer.
