San Antonio is recognized for its deep ties to Mexican culture, which is reflected in the city’s wide array of authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants. The city offers both traditional and fusion options for diners seeking everything from classic tacos and enchiladas to innovative takes on regional favorites.

Among the highlighted establishments is Rosario’s, located at 722 S. Saint Mary’s St., known for its Fish Taco, which was ranked as the No. 2 “Taco You Must Eat Before You Die” by Texas Monthly. Rosario’s has also received recognition for “Best Salsa” and “Best Margarita” in local awards. Its recently updated Southtown location features notable views.

La Hacienda de los Barrios at 18747 Redland Rd provides a menu with award-winning dishes, including vegetarian selections, and offers all-day breakfast options. The restaurant recommends trying the El Mofofo dish.

Carriqui, situated at 239 E Grayson St., draws inspiration from the green jay bird native to South Texas. The restaurant specializes in culinary fusions influenced by various cultures within the region, with Smoked Beef Cheek Barbacoa highlighted as a recommended dish.

Original Mexican Restaurant at 528 River Walk serves cuisine inspired by Old Mexico in a setting suitable for large groups or special events.

La Margarita Mexican Restaurant & Oyster Bar at 120 Produce Row offers dishes influenced by Monterrey, Laredo, and Guadalajara, along with premium margaritas and fresh oysters in Historic Market Square.

Mi Tierra Cafe y Panaderia at 218 Produce Row has been serving San Antonio for over 75 years. It features traditional dishes, handmade margaritas, live mariachi music, and an onsite bakery.

Aldaco’s Mexican Cuisine at 20079 Stone Oak is noted for its chicken enchiladas, Pastel Tres Leches dessert, and Avocado Margarita.

Rita’s on the River at 245 E Commerce caters to large groups and families seeking Tex-Mex fare along with accommodating service.

Pico de Gallo Restaurant at 111 S. Leona offers straightforward favorites such as fajitas and enchiladas paired with handmade tortillas in a lively atmosphere.

Casa Rio at 430 E. Commerce St., one of the oldest restaurants on the River Walk since opening in 1946, is recognized for its traditional “regular plate” featuring cheese enchilada, tamale, rice, beans, and chili con carne beneath iconic multi-colored umbrellas along the riverbank.

Ácenar at 146 E. Houston Street provides modern interpretations of Texas regional Mexican cuisine near popular downtown landmarks like the Majestic Theatre.

La Gloria – Pearl at 100 E Grayson brings together recipes inspired by Chef Johnny Hernandez’s travels throughout Mexico alongside a selection of drinks that includes beers, wines, tequilas, mescals, and rums.

San Antonio’s dining scene extends beyond Tex-Mex to include Italian, Asian cuisine and more options across the city.
