Governor Greg Abbott attended the ribbon cutting for Texas Instruments’ new 300 mm semiconductor wafer fabrication facility in Sherman, marking the grand opening of a site expected to employ thousands and involve a $40 billion capital investment over coming decades.
“Semiconductors are essential to building the space and artificial intelligence infrastructure that will define our future,” said Governor Abbott. “Today’s announcement by Texas Instruments helps Texas to expand our No. 1 ranking and helps lead the semiconductor manufacturing boom we have here in Texas. With help from Texas Instruments, Texas will remain the home for cutting edge semiconductor manufacturing and the home of more job opportunities than any other state in the United States of America.”
Governor Abbott was joined at the event by TI president and CEO Haviv Ilan, Senator Brent Hagenbuch, Representative Shelley Luther, Sherman Mayor Shawn Teamann, and other officials.
Texas Instruments (TI), based in Dallas, developed the first commercial silicon transistor in 1954 and saw Jack Kilby invent the integrated circuit there in 1958. The company’s history with Texas has played a significant role in technological development.
At the ceremony, Governor Abbott thanked TI for selecting Texas as its location for this advanced facility. He noted that Texas leads the nation in semiconductor manufacturing capacity and is recognized as the top state for semiconductors. The Governor emphasized that microchips will shape the future and said this plant would contribute to both economic growth and maintaining leadership in semiconductors.
According to information on the official website, Governor Abbott’s office has contributed to record jobs growth across Texas. The office is part of the executive branch of state government and operates primarily out of Austin at the State Insurance Building.
