Governor Greg Abbott has ordered the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Texas National Guard to deploy additional personnel and tactical resources to Austin in response to a planned protest linked to antifa. The deployment aims to protect residents and property during the demonstration.
“Violence and destruction will never be tolerated in Texas,” Governor Abbott said. “Today, I directed the Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas National Guard to deploy all necessary law enforcement officials and resources to ensure the safety of Austin residents. Texas will deter criminal mischief and work with local law enforcement to arrest anyone engaging in acts of violence or damaging property.”
The state’s response includes DPS law enforcement officers such as state troopers, Special Agents, and Texas Rangers, as well as soldiers from the Texas National Guard. They will be supported by aircraft and other tactical assets. This action adds to thousands of DPS troopers already stationed across Texas.
DPS’ Homeland Security Division is monitoring not only the planned protest in Austin but also other possible violent demonstrations statewide. The division plans to investigate any connections between protest activities and known terrorist organizations, bringing charges against individuals involved in unlawful actions.
