The Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) program has reached the halfway point in its six-week application period, with more than 130,000 student applications submitted and over 2,000 schools registered to participate. The family application window opened on February 4 and will close on March 17, leaving three weeks for families to apply.

Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock commented on the response so far: “Texas families are making their voices heard and signing up for school choice in huge, record-breaking numbers,” Hancock said. “With spring break around the corner, we don’t want the March 17 deadline to sneak up on anyone. So, if you’re considering applying, we encourage you to take a few minutes now to complete your application.”

Interest in the program was high from the start. More than 8,000 applications were submitted within the first hour of enrollment opening, and over 42,000 were received by the end of the first day.

The TEFA program does not approve applications based on when they are received. All applicants have an equal chance of receiving funding regardless of when they apply during the window. Families can also edit their applications or update information until the March 17 deadline.

Hancock added: “TEFA represents a significant investment in expanding educational opportunity and supporting long-term workforce readiness. Our team is committed to ensuring students have access to learning environments that prepare them for success.”
