The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) San Angelo District has been recognized for its efforts in using recycled tires to improve road surfaces. In recent projects, the district utilized more than 135,000 old tires, converting them into materials for pavement treatments. This approach not only diverted a significant number of tires from local landfills but also contributed to longer-lasting and smoother roads.
TxDOT works with industry partners throughout Texas to integrate recycled and environmentally friendly materials into both construction and maintenance projects when possible. The agency’s commitment to sustainable practices was highlighted by the Environmental Achievement Award, which acknowledges collaborative efforts that benefit communities.
“By repurposing materials typically discarded in a landfill, we’re enhancing the durability and performance of our roads while also safeguarding the environment,” said TxDOT San Angelo District Engineer Chris Cowen.
Across the United States, transportation agencies are investing in modernizing infrastructure and adopting sustainable solutions. For example, over $2.2 billion from the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program has been distributed to help urban and rural areas upgrade roads, bridges, transit systems, railways, ports, and other transportation assets. These funds aim to make transportation systems safer, more accessible, affordable, and environmentally responsible under President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. As TxDOT continues its work across Texas, it remains focused on practical strategies that meet current mobility needs while considering environmental impacts for future generations.
