TCEQ approves nearly $2 million in fines for environmental violations

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has approved fines totaling $1,751,893 against 22 regulated entities for violations of state environmental regulations. The penalties were announced following a meeting held on January 14, 2026.

The enforcement actions included agreed orders in several categories: four related to air quality, two involving industrial wastewater discharge, two multi-media cases, eight municipal wastewater discharge cases, and five concerning public water systems. Additionally, a default order was issued in the petroleum storage tank category.

On January 13, 2026, the executive director approved further penalties amounting to $157,838 against 49 entities.

The Texas Department of Environmental Quality is responsible for enforcing environmental regulations across Texas and operates from its headquarters in Austin with approximately 2,800 employees distributed across 16 regional offices statewide. The agency was formed in 1993 through the merger of previous state environmental agencies and regulates matters such as air emissions, water pollution, waste disposal and petroleum storage oversight.
