San Antonio will host its annual DiwaliSA festival on November 1, 2025, along the San Antonio River Walk. The event is a collaboration between San Antonio and its sister city Chennai, India, and is designed to celebrate Indian culture and traditions.
Diwali, also known as Deepavali or the “festival of lights,” is a significant holiday in India for Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism. The festival marks the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Traditional celebrations include lighting oil lamps, setting off fireworks, and sharing sweets such as kalakand and rasgulla.
DiwaliSA was first established in 2009 to strengthen the relationship between San Antonio and Chennai. The event features food and merchant booths representing different regions of India. Many participants dress in traditional Indian attire to immerse themselves in the festivities.
This year’s festival will offer a range of activities, including dance performances, theatre productions, art exhibits, and other cultural events. A highlight of the evening is the candle-lighting ceremony, where candles are floated down the San Antonio River Walk. The night concludes with a fireworks display.
Admission to DiwaliSA is free and open to the public. Visitors can expect Indian dance and music performances, authentic cuisine from multiple vendors, cultural booths, and the signature candle-lighting ceremony followed by fireworks. The festival is held near Hemisfair and downtown San Antonio.
DiwaliSA is part of San Antonio’s broader effort to celebrate diversity through cultural events and traditions. The city promotes its diverse heritage by hosting events like DiwaliSA that provide opportunities for residents and visitors to experience cultures from around the world.
“San Antonio thrives on diversity, and the celebration of Diwali is a perfect example of the city’s welcoming and accepting nature. We honor cultural traditions from around the world, and our culture is rooted in embracing the unique diversity that is seen throughout the city,” according to organizers.
The 2025 event marks the 17th year of DiwaliSA in San Antonio.
For those planning to attend or visit the city during this time, the festival offers an opportunity to experience Indian culture without leaving Texas.
“With DiwaliSA, you get to experience the richness of Indian culture without leaving the heart of Texas. The cultural scene is just one of many opportunities to experience San Antonio’s heritage,” organizers said.
