The Historic Pearl district in San Antonio has become a popular destination for both locals and visitors, offering a mix of dining, shopping, and entertainment options. The area’s history dates back to 1883 when it began as a brewery. By 1916, under Otto Koehler’s leadership, the brewery had grown to be the largest in Texas. Koehler’s personal life became part of local lore after he was killed by one of his three mistresses, all named Emma. Visitors can learn more about this story at Otto’s Ice House.

After closing as a brewery in 2001, the site was redeveloped into what is now known as the Pearl district. Today, it features a range of restaurants such as Full Goods Diner for breakfast and Southerleigh Fine Foods & Brewery for lunch. The area also includes Pearl Park, which serves as a gathering place for relaxation and people-watching.

For those interested in art and culture, the Museum Reach section of the River Walk offers public art installations along a quieter stretch of the river compared to downtown. In the afternoon, La Gloria provides margaritas that have been recognized locally multiple times.

Dinner options include Ladino, which serves Mediterranean cuisine with dishes influenced by French, Italian, Greek, Turkish, and Hebrew traditions. Entertainment continues into the evening at Stable Hall—a music venue that once housed brewery horses—and Sternewirth bar inside Hotel Emma.

Additional dining venues are available throughout Pearl including Best Quality Daughter and Brasserie Mon Chou Chou. On weekends, visitors can attend the farmers’ market to purchase local produce and artisan goods.

Parking is available at several locations within Pearl but tends to fill up quickly on weekends. Reservations are recommended for popular restaurants like Southerleigh and Ladino. The Museum Reach is accessible for strollers and families; pets are also welcome in many outdoor areas with water stations provided.

Mario J. Bass, President & CEO of Visit San Antonio Inc., said: “Whether you’re a foodie, a culture lover, or just here to relax, this Pearl itinerary highlights the best restaurants, bars, and things to do—all in one vibrant neighborhood.”
