IAM Union members from across Nebraska recently convened for the bi-annual meeting of the Nebraska State Council, which serves as the political branch of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) in the state. The gathering brought together delegates from Locals 31, 180, 602, 612, 1569, and District 6 to discuss legislative priorities and share updates from their respective locals.

A significant focus of the meeting was on preparations for the upcoming midterm elections. Participants discussed strategies to support candidates who advocate for collective bargaining rights, fair wages, and retirement security.

Nebraska State Council President Mike Helmink led the meeting with Secretary-Treasurer Dan Janak. Helmink addressed members about the importance of political engagement. “Elections have real consequences for our members and their families,” said Helmink. “If we want leaders who stand with working people, we need to stay organized, informed, and active. Political action is how we protect our contracts and our future.”

IAM Assistant Political Director Ty Richardson provided an overview of national trends related to the midterms and highlighted the importance of grassroots mobilization efforts. IAM Midwest Territory International Representatives Kevin Murch and Chris Tucker also spoke at the event, emphasizing ongoing support for Nebraska’s political activities.

The council’s assembly underscored that strong involvement in politics remains a priority for advancing issues important to IAM Union members and working families throughout Nebraska.
