IAM Union Western Territory General Vice President Robert “Bobby” Martinez recently visited members of IAM Local 1998 in Hawaii, underscoring the important role the local union plays within the Western Territory and in supporting national security.
Local 1998, which was established in 1951, has been active for over seventy years. The local is recognized for its longstanding efforts in representation and advocacy for workers in Hawaii. Over time, it has contributed to both the stability and growth of the IAM’s presence in the region.
“Our Hawaiian members play a pivotal role in our union,” remarked GVP Martinez. “Their solidarity through cultural diversity is empowering and the role our members play in the name of national defense is felt from coast to coast.”
Martinez highlighted that Hawaii’s location gives Local 1998 a special significance. Members are involved in industries tied to infrastructure and defense, making their work critical not only at a regional level but also nationally. He pointed out that their contributions go beyond daily job duties and have an impact on national security and defense operations.
The visit also emphasized how many Local 1998 members directly support defense operations by providing skills that help maintain operational readiness. Martinez said these responsibilities are significant, requiring strong union representation to ensure fair contracts and safe working conditions.
Martinez noted that Local 1998 reflects Hawaii’s diverse culture, bringing together people from various backgrounds. He described this diversity as a strength for both the local union and the broader IAM organization. According to Martinez, unity among different cultures helps reinforce solidarity across all communities represented by IAM.
During his trip, Martinez met with union members and leaders to discuss ongoing priorities and listen to concerns. His visit demonstrated IAM’s commitment to maintaining close connections with locals throughout its territory regardless of geographic distance.
