Taylor Rehmet, a longtime leader in the International Association of Machinists (IAM) union and a veteran, was recently sworn in as a Texas State Senator. This marks the first time that a rank-and-file union member has taken office in the Texas Senate.

Rehmet has held several leadership positions within his union. He described his move to the state legislature as a continuation of his advocacy for workers’ rights. “He explicitly pledges to address critical issues such as stagnant wages, retirement security and public education,” according to statements made during his inauguration.

The event was noted as significant for the labor movement, highlighting increased representation for union members in state government.
