IAM union members at Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico have voted to retain their union representation, rejecting a decertification effort backed by the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation. The outcome is seen as a significant development for the technicians responsible for aircraft maintenance and safety at the facility in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.
The vote follows ongoing efforts by workers and supporters throughout Puerto Rico who have called on Lufthansa Technik to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement that acknowledges their experience and role in aviation safety. Since May 2022, more than 200 mechanics and related employees at Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico joined the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) with the aim of improving workplace conditions. However, contract negotiations have stalled for nearly three years amid accusations of management delays.
In 2023, IAM requested intervention from the National Mediation Board as a federal mediator after progress on reaching an agreement slowed. Verdi, the German union representing Lufthansa employees in Europe, has also urged Lufthansa AG—the parent company—to help resolve the contract dispute.
Union officials attributed the decertification attempt to broader management strategies aimed at slowing negotiations while continuing to benefit from workers’ technical skills. They called on Lufthansa Technik to return to bargaining with proposals that recognize employee contributions.
“Lufthansa Technik must now come to the table ready to negotiate a contract that honors these workers’ skills and contributions,” said IAM International President Brian Bryant. “The workers have spoken loudly and clearly: they want respect, they want stability, and they want a fair contract. The IAM will not rest until they get the contract they deserve.”
“This vote is a powerful testament to what solidarity can achieve,” said IAM Southern Territory General Vice President Craig Martin. “Lufthansa Technik workers stood together against outside interference and made it clear that they want a strong union fighting for them at the table. Now it’s time for the company to respect that mandate and bargain in good faith.”
“Our members in Puerto Rico showed tremendous resolve in the face of intimidation and delay tactics,” said IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. “They know their worth, and they know that union representation is the path to better wages, safer working conditions, and a more secure future. Their unity is inspiring, and the IAM is with them every step of the way.”
A worker echoed these sentiments about remaining united through negotiations.
“We stayed united because we know what we bring to this company,” said Lufthansa Technik Aircraft Mechanic Ilianalyn Delgado. “We keep these aircraft flying safely. We deserve respect, a voice on the job, and a contract that reflects our work. This vote shows we’re not backing down.”
The IAM has called on Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico management to end its stalling tactics following this latest vote result.
