Representatives from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) met recently at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center to prepare for upcoming contract negotiations with GE Appliances. The Joint Bargaining Committee (JBC), which also includes members from UA and UE unions, represents unionized service technicians who work in service vans across the United States.
During their time at the center, shop committee members and negotiating representatives participated in a Negotiation Preparation Program. This program focused on strategic training, research analysis, and coordinated bargaining efforts among the multiple unions involved. Activities included reviewing contract language, developing proposals, conducting costing exercises, and planning communications strategies.
The program placed significant emphasis on member engagement to ensure that negotiation priorities align with what is important to union members working on the shop floor. Committees worked together across local unions to identify common challenges and share best practices related to wages, benefits, job security, and workplace protections.
IAM Union Collective Bargaining Director Craig Norman stated: “This training gives our negotiating committees the tools and confidence they need to fight for the best possible agreement. Preparation is power, and when we walk into negotiations, we do so with a clear strategy and the full strength of our membership behind us.”
