Howard “Howie” Huestis, president of IAM Local 1746, has been recognized for his longstanding commitment to the East Hartford community. Huestis, who leads union members at Pratt and Whitney in East Hartford, Connecticut, was honored with an IAM Human Rights Award at a recent Connecticut State Council meeting.

“I grew up in this town. I am dedicated to this town,” said Huestis. “I know what it’s like to be on the receiving end of needing donations.”

Under Huestis’s leadership, IAM Local 1746 Women’s Committee members Therese Hervieux and Taylor Salmon have continued their partnership with East Hartford Public Schools. Together, they organize an annual event that provides thousands of school supplies to children from families with limited resources. The event is held each year and is well anticipated by local students.

Last year’s distribution took place at East Hartford Green Park. Volunteers set up booths and tables to hand out backpacks, notebooks, rulers, pencils, and other materials. The IAM Eastern Territory contributed additional supplies for the event.

The annual backpack rally has grown over time to include participation from other community organizations and sometimes offers health services. The goal is to help students begin the school year prepared.

At the Connecticut State Council gathering, David Sullivan, General Vice President of IAM Eastern Territory, and Chief of Staff Lorie Wilson presented Huestis with the award in recognition of his efforts in organizing and sustaining the backpack rally initiative.
