After 11 weeks on strike, members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local 1297 at Libbey Glass in Toledo have voted to ratify a union-proposed agreement. The vote took place on Friday, November 7, and the offer now awaits approval from company management.
The work stoppage began on August 23 as union members protested what they described as unfair labor practices by Libbey Glass. The proposed agreement seeks to address several key issues raised by workers, including mandatory overtime that limits family time, efforts to reduce union and worker rights and protections, and increasing health insurance costs.
“This was a proactive effort by the union to bring an end to the strike and get our members back to work,” said IAM District 54 President and Directing Business Representative T. Dean Wright, Jr. “Our members have stayed strong and united throughout this process, and this offer represents a fair path forward that addresses their core concerns. Now Libbey has a chance to treat their employees right and accept this offer and reinstate stability to its Toledo operations.”
About 84 IAM Union members are employed at Libbey Glass in Toledo, where they manufacture glass products distributed globally.
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers is one of North America’s largest industrial trade unions. It represents around 600,000 active and retired members across various sectors in the United States and Canada.
