The ongoing federal government shutdown is affecting many members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) and the National Federation of Federal Employees-IAM (NFFE-IAM). These unions represent thousands of workers employed by federal agencies, federal contractors, or in sectors that depend on federal funding. The shutdown has resulted in missed paychecks, suspended contracts, delayed maintenance, and increased uncertainty for families who rely on this work.

IAM Union International President Brian Bryant stated, “The IAM Union strongly urges a bipartisan funding solution, negotiated in good faith between Democrats and Republicans, to end this shutdown. A shutdown is unjust, cruel, and devastating to working families, and we will never stand by while our members are used as leverage for political gain. The IAM also strongly condemns the White House’s threat to use a shutdown as a means to justify illegally firing scores of federal workers.”

The union is asking affected members—including those furloughed or who have missed paychecks—to share their experiences so their voices can be heard during advocacy efforts. The IAM’s National and Legislative team continues to lobby on Capitol Hill for an end to the shutdown and long-term worker protections.

Members are advised to report to work unless they receive official written notice of furloughs. The union encourages staying informed through email updates from both IAM and NFFE-IAM. It also reminds members that support is available through union resources during this period.

IAM leadership has called for solidarity among all impacted workers and accountability from lawmakers responsible for the current situation.
