The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is set to hold its next Spanish Leadership I Class from April 19 to 24, 2025, at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center. The program is available to all IAM members and staff.

According to the organization, “As our membership continues to grow and diversify, the IAM’s Spanish Leadership I Class encourages members to step up and take on greater leadership roles – building the confidence and skills needed to better represent, advocate for, and stand alongside every member on the job.”

Fluency in Spanish is not a requirement for participation; however, having some understanding of the language is considered beneficial. All classroom instruction, books, and materials will be presented in Spanish. The curriculum follows that of the English Leadership programs but focuses on building leadership skills while strengthening connections with Spanish-speaking members and communities.

“The focus is on building leadership skills while strengthening our ability to connect with Spanish-speaking members and communities,” according to the IAM.

The programs at Winpisinger Center are developed by the Spanish Language Working Group (SLWG), which consists of IAM staff and members. The curriculum covers topics such as labor history, parliamentary procedure in local administration, steward responsibilities, human rights, organizing strategies, as well as government and politics.

Since it began, the Spanish Leadership Program has emphasized inclusivity by providing a welcoming environment for those who may face language barriers. It also encourages those interested in engaging with fellow union members whose primary language is Spanish.

Openings remain available for all levels of the Spanish Leadership programs. Participation does not count against a Local’s regular allotment for leadership school attendance.

Key dates for upcoming programs in 2026 include:
– Spanish Leadership I: April 19-24
– Spanish Leadership II: July 26-31
– Advanced Spanish Leadership: November 15-20

The IAM states that it remains committed to comprehensive education offerings in multiple languages—English, Spanish, and French—to ensure that all workers have access to opportunities for growth within both their union roles and broader labor movement efforts.

For further information about these programs or how to register, individuals are encouraged to contact their Local President or reach out directly to the Winpisinger Center at 301-373-8820 or w3leadership@iamaw.org.
