Houston physician Shikha Bharaktiya, MD, from Endocrinology Clinics of Texas, will lead her first Walk with a Doc Texas event this Saturday, November 15, at 9 a.m. The walk will take place at Memorial Park in Houston and is open to community members of all ages. In case of bad weather, the event will move to the Galleria mall.
The Walk with a Doc program encourages people to improve their health through regular walking events led by physicians. Participants can ask questions and receive support from Dr. Bharaktiya and other healthcare professionals during the walk. According to organizers, “Walking is one of the simplest, best things people can do to live a long, high-quality life. Walk with a Doc makes it easy by providing the time, place, motivation (a brief health information talk), and fellow participants for a fun walking experience.”
The initiative is overseen nationally by Walk with a Doc, a nonprofit founded in 2005 by cardiologist David Sabgir, MD. In Texas, the program is supported by the Texas Medical Association (TMA), which represents more than 59,000 physicians and medical students across the state. TMA’s main goal since its founding in 1853 has been to improve health for Texans.
Walk with a Doc Texas receives funding from TMA Foundation as well as support from TMA Insurance Trust and donations from institutions and individuals. Participation in the walks is free and does not require preregistration.
More information about upcoming walks will be available on the local chapter’s website.
