Heavy equipment operators and administrative staff employed by Akima at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state have voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Union, according to a Mar. 10 announcement. The group of 10 workers will now begin the process of negotiating their first union contract.
The decision to unionize is significant for these employees, as it provides them with an opportunity to negotiate collectively for wages, job protections, and other workplace benefits. The campaign was led by IAM District W24 Business Representative and Organizer Aubria Hopes, who worked closely with the workers throughout the organizing effort.
Support for forming a union began among heavy equipment operators and soon included administrative employees after discussions about collective bargaining resonated with the group. Despite challenges such as employer opposition and delays caused by a temporary National Labor Relations Board closure, the workers maintained unity during the process.
“From the very beginning, these workers understood the power of standing together,” said Aubria Hopes. “They asked thoughtful questions, supported one another throughout the process, and stayed focused on building a stronger future where they have a real voice at work.”
With shop stewards and a bargaining committee now elected, preparations are underway for contract negotiations. Robert “Bobby” Martinez, IAM Western Territory General Vice President, said: “This organizing victory shows what is possible when working people come together and demand respect on the job. We are proud to welcome these workers into the IAM family and look forward to standing with them as they negotiate a contract that reflects their value and the important work they perform.”
Brandon Bryant, IAM District W24 President and Directing Business Representative, added: “When workers unite, they gain the power to raise standards on the job. Our union is proud to support these members as they move forward.”
