Governor Greg Abbott has issued a proclamation designating September 15 through October 15, 2025, as Hispanic Heritage Month in Texas. The announcement highlights the influence of Hispanic culture on the state’s history and society.
In his statement, Governor Abbott reflected on the diverse heritage of Texas, noting that its cultural development began before both the United States and the Republic of Texas. He emphasized that various world powers were drawn to Texas for its land and economic prospects, which led to waves of migration over centuries. According to Abbott, “It is vital that we remember the important role both individuals and cultures have played in building the Texas we know today.”
Abbott discussed how Hispanic culture forms a significant part of Texas’s legacy. He referenced the collaboration between Texians and Tejanos during the Texas Revolution, saying this partnership established an independent republic deeply connected to Hispanic traditions. “Due to geography and a shared history, the blend of Mexican and Texan traditions is evident in our state’s cuisine, language, architecture, music, and more. Hispanic Americans enrich Texas with beautiful traditions and unique perspectives that shine throughout the Lone Star State,” Abbott stated.
The governor acknowledged numerous contributions made by Hispanic Americans in areas such as healthcare, education, business ownership, and community leadership. He noted their role in advancing Texas’s growth and prosperity: “Whether serving as doctors, teachers, small business owners, or community leaders, the leadership of Hispanic Americans plays an important role in Texas’ story.” Abbott also mentioned his wife Cecilia as an example: “I am especially proud that my wife Cecilia is the first Hispanic First Lady of Texas, and her own life story inspires many, while exemplifying the American Dream.”
Governor Abbott called on Texans to recognize Hispanic heritage during this period: “At this time, I encourage all Texans to celebrate Hispanic heritage, while illustrating the importance of diversity. With this celebration, let us embrace the diversity of our great state while strengthening the bonds that unite us as Texans and as Americans.”
He concluded by urging all residents to observe Hispanic Heritage Month with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
