Texas Governor Greg Abbott has instructed the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to begin criminal investigations into the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

“The goal is to identify, disrupt, and eradicate terrorist organizations engaged in criminal activities in Texas,” said Governor Abbott. “We will target threats of violence, intimidation, and harassment of our citizens. We will also focus on individuals or groups who unlawfully impose Sharia law—which violates the Texas Constitution and state statutes.”

DPS Special Agents assigned to FBI Joint Terrorism Task Forces across Texas will work with local and federal law enforcement agencies. Their efforts will include gathering intelligence and starting investigations into possible violations of state and federal laws. The DPS aims to prevent any group from engaging in criminal activity or fostering extremist Islamic radicalism that would violate state laws.

Governor Abbott has previously taken actions such as designating both the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR as foreign terrorist organizations. He has also called for investigations into Sharia courts.
