Governor Greg Abbott spoke at the 2026 Texas Rally for Life, held on the South Steps of the Texas Capitol in Austin. The event, organized annually by the Texas Alliance for Life, gathers pro-life supporters from across Texas to march and express their support for anti-abortion policies.
“We are united by the truth that our Creator endowed us with the right to life itself,” said Governor Abbott. “There is no freedom more precious than life itself. All of you have been life savers, and thousands of newborn babies are the result of your heroic efforts. Thank you for being a part of the movement that has made Texas the beacon for life in the United States of America.”
Governor Abbott discussed several legislative measures recently enacted in Texas aimed at restricting abortion access and supporting organizations that promote alternatives to abortion. He referenced Senate Bill 33, which bans public funding for abortions; Senate Bill 1388, which directs Thriving Texas Family Grants to organizations that do not provide abortions; and House Bill 7, which prohibits manufacturing and distributing abortion-inducing drugs.
Abbott was joined at the rally by Amy O’Donnell, Executive Director of Texas Alliance for Life; James Booker, Executive Director of Life Choice Medical Clinic and Care; Rebecca Contreras, President and CEO of AvantGarde LLC; Bishop Daniel E. Garcia from the Diocese of Austin; abortion survivor Claire Culwell; Representative Don McLaughlin; Representative Hilary Hickland; as well as other faith leaders, advocates, and elected officials.
The governor also highlighted his previous actions as both Governor and Attorney General to further restrict abortion in Texas. In May 2021, he signed Senate Bill 8—commonly known as a heartbeat bill—which prohibits most abortions after detection of fetal cardiac activity. He also signed House Bill 1280, which banned nearly all abortions in Texas following the overturning of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court.
