Governor Greg Abbott has activated additional state wildfire response resources as increased fire danger is expected in western and northwestern Texas through the weekend.

“As Texas closely monitors potential wildfire threats, our state is ready to deploy all necessary resources to at risk communities,” said Governor Abbott. “Today, I directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to activate additional response resources across West and Northwest Texas in areas of potential wildfire risk. I strongly urge Texans to create an emergency plan, limit any activities that can cause a spark, and heed the guidance of state and local officials. Together, we can prevent elevating the risk of these wildfires and protect our homes, businesses, and each other.”

The Texas A&M Forest Service reports that North and West Texas—including Texoma and the Panhandle—face increased wildfire potential before conditions expand westward into the South Plains, Permian Basin, and Big Country. Dry vegetation combined with breezy weather may heighten fire risks in these regions.

Under Governor Abbott’s direction, multiple agencies are providing support for local wildfire response efforts. The Texas A&M Forest Service has deployed firefighters from various jurisdictions along with heavy equipment such as bulldozers and motor graders. More than 15 federally contracted firefighting aircraft are available for use, including large air tankers for retardant drops and super scoopers for water drops.

Other agencies involved include:
– The Texas Department of State Health Services with medical teams and ambulances
– The Texas National Guard deploying Blackhawk helicopters equipped for firefighting
– The Texas Department of Transportation monitoring road conditions
– The Department of Public Safety patrolling roadways
– Parks and Wildlife officers assisting as needed
– AgriLife Extension agents supporting agricultural needs
– Agencies coordinating animal resource needs

Additionally, power outage monitoring is being conducted by the Public Utility Commission of Texas while natural gas supply oversight comes from the Railroad Commission. Environmental quality is monitored by the relevant commission, while information on services is provided through the 2-1-1 referral network.

Governor Abbott’s recent actions have included renewing disaster declarations related to wildfires, mobilizing further resources ahead of elevated fire conditions, amending declarations for affected areas, activating response teams in anticipation of threats, and directing emergency management authorities accordingly.

Greg Abbott has led the Office of Texas Governor since his election in 2014 according to official sources. His office forms part of the executive branch overseeing statewide authority and delivering services throughout Texas. Based primarily out of Austin’s State Insurance Building the office has also advanced public safety initiatives alongside other priorities like job creation and border security.
