Governor Greg Abbott announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) for the 8 Ball Fire in the Texas Panhandle. The fire began in Armstrong County and moved into Donley County, threatening homes and infrastructure and leading to local evacuations.
“Texas continues to work around the clock to provide all necessary resources to those affected by the 8 Ball Fire,” said Governor Abbott. “With this FEMA grant, our brave wildfire response teams will be further equipped to manage and contain fires in the Panhandle. I thank the Trump Administration and FEMA for swiftly approving this funding and thank our heroic emergency personnel for their efforts to protect their fellow Texans.”
As of Monday morning, the 8 Ball Fire had burned about 13,000 acres and was 55 percent contained. The fire forced approximately 400 homes to evacuate and threatened more than 1,100 additional residences. Some residents have been able to return home, but state and local officials remain active in firefighting, containment, and public safety operations.
The FMAG approval allows Texas to receive up to 75 percent reimbursement from the federal government for eligible wildfire response costs. These grants support states and local governments in managing fires that could cause major destruction.
The Texas State Emergency Operations Center is operating at Level II (Escalated Response), with resources deployed by the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) under direction from Governor Abbott. Wildfire resources, safety information, current fire maps, and damage reporting tools are available on the TDEM Disaster Portal at disaster.texas.gov.
Governor Abbott has taken steps such as increasing readiness levels at the State Emergency Operations Center before critical fire weather conditions arise and activating extra state wildfire response assets when needed.
