CPS Energy has released a Request for Proposal (RFP) seeking up to 600 megawatts of new solar energy through Power Purchase Agreements. This move is part of the utility’s Vision 2027 generation plan, which focuses on providing affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy to the San Antonio region.
“Every megawatt counts in powering San Antonio, one of the fastest growing regions across the country,” said Rudy D. Garza, President and CEO of CPS Energy. “We are the number one purchaser of solar energy in the state of Texas. I’m grateful for our dedicated teams and their efforts to grow our use of solar to fulfill CPS Energy’s Vision 2027 strategic plan.”
Currently, CPS Energy operates more than 1,000 MW of solar power and leads Texas in contracted solar generation. The utility expects that after this RFP process it will have over 1,600 MW either operational or under contract for its customers. Solar currently makes up about 9% of CPS Energy’s total energy mix from 15 different solar farms.
The RFP aligns with both Vision 2027 and the City of San Antonio’s Climate Action & Adaptation Plan (CAAP), which targets carbon neutrality by 2050 and encourages diverse sources of power generation.
In addition to expanding its solar portfolio, CPS Energy plans to issue another battery storage RFP by year-end following last year’s announcement regarding an additional 470 MW in future battery capacity.
Bidders interested in participating must submit their proposals through the Power Advocate Portal by January 8, 2026 at 11:45 p.m. Central Time.
Founded in 1860, CPS Energy is recognized as the largest public provider of electricity and natural gas in the United States, serving more than 970,000 electric customers and nearly 390,000 natural gas customers throughout San Antonio and neighboring counties. The company reports that combined customer bills remain among the lowest when compared with other major U.S. cities.
