CPS Energy has announced the release of a Request for Proposal (RFP) to acquire up to 500 megawatts (MW) of additional battery storage. This move is part of the utility’s Vision 2027 Generation Plan, which focuses on providing affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy to San Antonio and surrounding areas.
“This request to add more battery storage to our generation portfolio continues to fulfill our promise to deliver on the utility’s Vision 2027 Generation Plan,” said Rudy D. Garza, President and CEO of CPS Energy. “The RFP reinforces our team’s ongoing commitment to secure additional energy resources needed to keep pace with our community’s rapid growth.”
With this new RFP, CPS Energy expects its total operational or contracted battery storage capacity will exceed 1,000 MW. Currently, the utility has brought 50 MW online under the Vision 2027 plan, with another 470 MW in development and scheduled for completion in 2026.
The initiative also supports CPS Energy’s alignment with the City of San Antonio’s Climate Action & Adaptation Plan (CAAP), which targets carbon neutrality by 2050 and encourages diversity in energy generation resources.
Interested parties must submit their proposals through the Power Advocate Portal by Friday, January 30, 2026, at 11:45 p.m. Central Time.
Founded in 1860, CPS Energy serves more than 970,000 electric customers and over 390,000 natural gas customers across San Antonio and parts of seven neighboring counties. The company has generated $10.1 billion in revenue for the City of San Antonio since 1942 and is known for maintaining some of the lowest combined energy bills among large U.S. cities while supporting local economic development and education initiatives.
