The U.S. Census Bureau will begin an embargo for the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates on September 9, 2025, at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. The embargoed data will be released to the public on September 11.
The ACS collects statistics about people and housing in the United States, including information on language spoken at home, education, commuting patterns, employment status, mortgage and rent details, income levels, poverty rates, and health insurance coverage. The survey is notable for being the only source of local estimates for most of its more than 40 topics.
According to the Census Bureau, “The one-year statistics will be available to embargo subscribers beginning Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. ET for all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, all congressional districts and metropolitan statistical areas, and other geographic areas with populations of 65,000 or more.”
Subscribers to the embargo will have access to these statistics from Tuesday morning until Thursday at 12:01 a.m., just before they are made public. The Census Bureau has stated that “Wire and distribution services are prohibited from distributing embargoed news stories and data files before the public release date and time.” Further details about this policy can be found in the Census Bureau’s official guidelines.
Once released publicly on September 11 by 10 a.m., all related data products—including those on data.census.gov—will become accessible to everyone. Registration for embargo access is available through the Census Bureau’s website at https://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/embargoed_releases.
