CapMetro has started work on its Transit Plan 2035, which will guide the development of Central Texas’ transit network over the next five to ten years. The plan is based on data analysis, coordination with stakeholders, and input from more than 8,000 community members who participated in a public survey last fall.

A major component of the plan is Austin’s first Light Rail system. CapMetro says that this new development is expected to have a significant economic impact on the city. According to CapMetro, “Not only is Austin’s first Light Rail an exciting new development for the transit system but data has also shown it will be an economic engine for the city and result in an overwhelmingly positive economic impact.”

In the initial five years before the launch of Light Rail service, CapMetro plans to focus on maintaining existing services while making cost-effective changes aimed at increasing ridership. This includes improvements such as new Rapid Routes 800 Pleasant Valley and 837 Expo Center. After Light Rail opens, attention will shift toward further adjustments and growth within the bus network.

The final stages of Transit Plan 2035 look beyond 2035 and aim to address regional transit growth and any remaining elements from Project Connect not completed in earlier phases.

CapMetro invites residents to participate in shaping local transit by attending open house events scheduled for August 26 (virtual) and August 28 at 2910 E 5th Street in Austin. Community members can register for these events or provide feedback online at capmetro.org/transitplan2035.

Additional opportunities for community engagement are available through CapMetro’s programs and initiatives detailed at capmetro.org/community-engagement.
