The Alamo Colleges District and Schreiner University have announced a new transfer agreement designed to support eligible students as they move from community college to a four-year degree. The expanded partnership, called Promise-to-Promise, allows students who start at any of the five Alamo Colleges to transfer seamlessly to Schreiner University, with tuition costs covered at both institutions.

Schreiner is now the first private institution in the South Central Texas Transfer Compact to participate in this pathway with Alamo Colleges. Under the agreement, students can benefit from both the AlamoPROMISE scholarship, which offers free tuition for Bexar County high school graduates attending one of the Alamo Colleges, and Schreiner’s Promise Program, which provides last-dollar tuition coverage for up to four semesters.

“Schreiner University joining our Promise-to-Promise pathways is a powerful step forward and significant as the first private institution in the South Central Texas Transfer Compact to make this commitment,” said Dr. Mike Flores, Alamo Colleges District Chancellor. “With Schreiner University now alongside UT San Antonio and Texas A&M–San Antonio, we are expanding regional momentum around our moonshot. These partnerships make earning a degree more attainable and more achievable for our students.”

One of the first students admitted under this new program will be Danielle Chavarria, who recently graduated from St. Philip’s College with an Associate of Science degree. She plans to become a registered nurse through Schreiner University.

“When I found out I would be able to attend Schreiner tuition-free – to attend a private university – without the burden of debt I was in shock. It felt like such a relief. Such a blessing. Truly, it felt like my prayers were being answered. I’m so grateful for the Alamo Colleges District and for programs like AlamoPROMISE. I don’t think people always realize just how powerful these programs are,” said Chavarria.

Charlie McCormick, President of Schreiner University, commented on the broader mission behind the partnership: “From its founding, Schreiner University has believed in educating the whole person and preparing students for meaningful work and purposeful lives. We also know that no single educational pathway fits every student. By partnering with Alamo Colleges, we are opening new doors for students across South Central Texas and the Hill Country, including those who may begin their journey elsewhere and discover that a small, residential university in Kerrville is the right next step. This partnership honors our shared commitment to access, affordability, and opportunity, and to walking alongside students as they continue their educational journey.”

About three-quarters of Alamo Colleges students go on to transfer to four-year universities after completing their studies at one of its campuses.

This latest initiative marks the third such collaboration by Alamo Colleges aimed at improving student transitions into four-year programs; previous partnerships were established with UT San Antonio’s Bold Promise Program in 2022 and Texas A&M-University-San Antonio’s Promise-to-Promise partnership in 2024.

For further details about these opportunities or eligibility requirements for participating in these programs, additional information can be found on respective institutional websites.
