Governor Greg Abbott has announced that more than $7.9 million in Funds for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) grants have been awarded to 38 organizations serving veterans and their families in the Southeast Texas Gulf Coast and Houston area. The Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) administers these grants, which will provide services to over 5,200 veterans and their families across 13 counties.
“In Texas, we will always stand with the brave men and women who selflessly fought for the freedom and liberties we enjoy today,” said Governor Abbott. “This over $7.9 million in grants will provide crucial services and financial support for our veterans and their families in the Gulf Coast and Houston so they can lead successful lives in our great state. Texas will never forget our veterans, their families, and their service to our state and our country.”
Kevin Barber, TVC Vice Chair and Army veteran, also spoke at the event. “The Gulf Coast is home to one of the highest concentrations of veterans not only in Texas, but the country, and it is our responsibility as their state advocates to link them to local resources,” said Barber. “I sincerely thank each of our award recipients for serving our veterans. Your organizations are recognized for making a difference in the lives of those who served.”
Barber presented the grants at Easter Seals of Greater Houston. The funding will support a variety of services including financial assistance, peer support services, clinical counseling, housing support under Housing for Texas Heroes programs, legal aid, skill-based training support, homeless veteran assistance, mental health care through Veterans Treatment Courts, family support services, transportation help, home modification aid, rental or mortgage assistance.
Some grant recipients include Family Service Center of Houston and Harris County ($350,000), Fob Rasor ($50,000), Fort Bend County ($200,000 combined), Harris County ($695,000 combined), Houston Habitat for Humanity ($350,000), Impact A Hero ($225,000), Katy Christian Ministries ($280,000 combined), Lone Star Legal Aid ($350,000), Montgomery County ($305,000 combined), Northwest Assistance Ministries ($350,000), PTSD Foundation of America ($350,000), Rebuilding Together Houston ($350,000), Santa Maria Hostel ($175,000), SoléAna Stables ($50,000), Tri-County Behavioral Healthcare ($190,000) among others.
In May 2025 Governor Abbott had previously announced a record-breaking $46.3 million in over 200 grants to 175 organizations statewide. This broader effort is expected to reach nearly 40,000 veterans as well as their dependents and surviving spouses (source).
Since its inception in 2009 through the current 2025-2026 cycle more than $359 million has been distributed through over 1,600 FVA grants.
Funding comes mainly from proceeds from designated Texas Lottery games supporting veteran causes (source). Additional donations can be made when Texans register vehicles or purchase hunting or fishing licenses.
